Are your belongings protected from changing temperatures?

MyStore Team

At MyStore Self Storage our cool insulated and temperate self storage building is excellent at protecting your things. Along with keeping them in perfect condition throughout the heat of summer.

So what kind of items do we recommend you keep in our temperate storage rooms? Let’s take a look…

1) Protect Wooden furniture

When exposed to too much moisture over time, wood can crack, warp, or rot. For anyone storing wooden furniture. Like bed frames, tables and chairs, end tables, nightstands, dressers, and more. This makes having cool and temperate storage absolutely necessary. The lower the humidity, the better.

2) Protect Leather furniture

Leather is sensitive to swings of hot and cold. Temperature control is an important safeguard for pricey leather pieces. Leather that’s not stored in a cool climate of around 15° Celsius all year round is more susceptible to moisture. Which can discolour the pieces and cause mildew.

3) Household appliances

Washers and dryers, dishwashers, ovens, microwaves, and refrigerators all need a controlled temperate climate otherwise parts could rust and cause long term damage to the appliances. You should thoroughly clean and dry the appliances before storing them, cooler climates also aid in stopping mould and mildew from building up.

4) Special collections

The point of collecting certain items is to preserve them for years to come. Temperature control can help with that preservation. Everything from coins, stamps, and comics to wine collections need to be stored in a consistent cool temperature to prevent damage caused by fluctuating temperature changes and humidity. If you have never thought about wine storage then perhaps you should. For collectors who’ve invested a lot of time and money in growing their personal collections, spoiling due to improper storage would be an irreversible nightmare.

5) Protect Musical instruments

Musical instruments, though sometimes large, are very delicate and need to be handled with great care. Whether it’s short-term or long-term storage for instruments, a dry and cool storage room is a must. For instance, a piano can be damaged very easily by extreme temperatures and humidity, both of which can ruin the piano’s strings, keys, and wooden exterior over time. The wood will expand or contract in either hot or cold weather.

6) Artwork

Whether it’s a lavish oil painting or a collection of bespoke pottery, climate-controlled storage is a good idea for all artwork and art supplies. We also suggest using our clear plastic boxes to seal out dust and moisture while in storage.

7) Clothing

Climate-controlled storage can keep your clothes in good shape. The last thing you want is mould and mildew finding their way onto your clothing, especially if they’ll be sitting unattended for several months. Using plastic storage boxes over cardboard boxes also prevents moisture from reaching your clothing and clothing lasts longer when they are kept dry.

8) Business documents

With business storage, it doesn’t matter whether you’re storing files in boxes or file cabinets we say that a temperate and dry storage room is the best thing for your archive documents. Paperwork tends to fade, discolour, or dissolve with long exposure to moisture. MyStore recommends using plastic boxes rather than cardboard
boxes to keep moisture out.

9) Photos

When storing photos, cool temperate storage is a must to help ensure your memories are preserved. Also, if temperatures get too high in an area where photos are stacked on top of one another, the prints can blend together and deteriorate. Again, you might want to invest in our plastic storage boxes over cardboard boxes for added protection.

10) Electronic items

From plasma TVs and computers to recording equipment and audio gear, you might be filling your storage room with some very expensive electronics. With our temperate and dry storage rooms you know that you are reducing the chance of damage to your electronics.

The truth is that cool temperate storage is extremely beneficial for all your personal or business items during this very hot summer we are experiencing. If you are not sure whether something you have is better kept in our cool storage rooms or not then a brief chat with a MyStore representative will quickly help you determine exactly what kind of storage is right for you.
